Technical Safety & Compliance Standards

Professional fabrication requires professional installation. At Metal Fab Guys®, we build equipment to industrial tolerances, but a high-performance outdoor kitchen is only as safe as its installation environment. Whether you are installing a custom-fabricated island or integrated gas appliances, adhering to national safety standards is a non-negotiable part of the build process.

The resources below are designed to assist contractors, plumbers, and homeowners in maintaining compliance with the National Fuel Gas Code and local building regulations. While we provide these technical guidelines as a resource, always consult with your local parish or city building department to ensure your project meets specific regional codes.

All gas and fire products—whether custom-fabricated or drop-shipped—must be installed, connected, and leak-tested by a licensed professional (Plumber or Gas Fitter). Improper installation is the leading cause of appliance failure and residential fires.

Liability Notice: Metal Fab Guys is not responsible for incidental or consequential damages resulting from uncertified installations. Failure to provide proof of professional installation may void manufacturer warranties on high-end components like Fire Magic or American Made Grills.

In an enclosed outdoor kitchen island, gas behaves differently based on its weight relative to the air. Without cross-ventilation, a small leak can fill the island cavity, creating a high-risk explosion hazard.

Natural Gas (NG)
Lighter than air; rises and traps under countertops.
Vent at Highest Point
Liquid Propane (LP)
Heavier than air; sinks and "pools" at the floor level.
Vent at Lowest Point

The Rule: A minimum of two (2) vent panels (20 sq. inches each) are required on opposite sides of the enclosure to ensure constant airflow exchange.

High-performance grills generate extreme radiant heat. If your island structure contains combustible materials (wood framing, vinyl siding, or certain composites), you must utilize a thermal break.

Combustible Framing (Wood)Insulated Liner Mandatory
Overhead Structures (Pergolas)60" Minimum Clearance
Rear Combustible Walls24" Minimum Clearance
Under-Grill StorageNo Flammables/Cleaning Chems

The Insulated Jacket: This stainless steel sleeve is specifically engineered for each grill model to prevent pyrolysis—the chemical decomposition of wood framing caused by long-term heat exposure.

For official building codes and national safety protocols, refer to these non-commercial authorities:

→ NFPA 54: National Fuel Gas Code
→ FEMA: Outdoor Fire Safety Guide
→ CPSC: Grilling Safety & Recalls
