Phase 1: The Engineering Fundamentals
At Metal Fab Guys, we prioritize your safety above all else. We ensure every appliance in your build carries recognized safety certifications (such as UL or CSA). Read More [source: www.nfpa.org]
Outdoor kitchens require more than aesthetic planning, they require technical precision. All installations must conform to local building codes, or in their absence, the National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z22.1/NFPA 54).
Codes Matter. All installations must conform to local codes, or in their absence, the National Fuel Gas Code (ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54).
Safety & Compliance
Insulated Grill Jackets
If you are building your island with combustible materials (like wood framing or standard cement board), an insulated jacket is non-negotiable. These jackets act as a thermal shield, protecting your structure from the high heat generated by professional-grade grills and preventing fire hazards or material warping.
Island Ventilation
Gas builds up differently than air. If you are using propane, it is heavier than air and will settle at the bottom of your cabinet. We require at least two (optimally four) 20-square-inch vents per cabinet with a gas connection to allow proper airflow and gas dissipation.
Overhead Safety
If your grill is situated under a pergola, roof, or any covered structure, a high-performance, outdoor-rated vent hood is a safety requirement. Standard indoor hoods are not rated for the elements or the power needed for outdoor cooking. Outdoor hoods should be 36–42 inches above the cooking surface and ideally extend 6 inches beyond the grill on each side to effectively capture grease and smoke.
Phase 2: Preparing for Your Consultation
To provide you with an accurate, professional assessment, please prepare the following details for our team:
Pre-Order Checklist
Project Phase
Let us know where you are in the journey, whether you are just dreaming, actively planning, or ready to build.
Space Dimensions
Providing the rough width and depth of your intended area allows us to recommend the right equipment.
Fuel Source & Requirements
Confirm if you are using Natural Gas (NG) or Liquid Propane (LP). This is vital for your piping, safety requirements, and determining where we place your vents—low for LP, high for NG.
Construction Materials
Are you building with stone, brick, or metal (non-combustible), or wood and standard board (combustible)? This dictates whether you need an insulated grill jacket to prevent fire hazards.
Ventilation Plan
Have you accounted for island cabinet vents (to prevent gas build-up) and overhead ventilation if your grill is positioned under a roof or pergola?
Safety Clearances
For your peace of mind, please ensure your design maintains a 5-foot horizontal and 10-foot vertical clearance from other combustible objects, such as wooden decks or awnings.
Budget Goal
Sharing your budget range allows our experts to prioritize high-quality, professional-grade components that fit your financial plan.
